abstract = "Diagnosing the drivers of extreme precipitation events over the
S{\~a}o Francisco River basin is important for water management
purposes. This work proposes a new approach to characterizing
extremes. The extremes are found through Principal Components
Analysis (PCA) of the MERGE precipitation dataset produced by
CPTEC/INPE. The time series considers the mean monthly
precipitation over the S{\~a}o Francisco basin within
December-January-February, which is the rainy season over most
parts of the basin. The time series of rainfall extremes was
correlated with climate indexes and a diagnosis is held in the
most extreme using composite analysis. The extreme events were
compared to those found in the literature. The patterns of sea
surface temperature and wind at upper levels during the events
strongly emphasize that the most contributing factor to the
precipitation is the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ).",
