abstract = "Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are the
interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections observed at
the Sun. These interplanetary structures differ from the ambient
solar wind in many aspects, among them, their high intensity
magnetic fields which can be observed either within their internal
structure or at the associated shocksheath region. In this work we
examine the characteristics of intense ICME sheath magnetic fields
observed during solar cycles 23 and 24. After careful inspection
of all ICMEs observed in the vicinity of the Earth from 1998 to
2017, we selected all the events in which ICME sheath fields were
observed to possess higher intensities than the their
corresponding ICME internal fields. This subset of events is of
particular interest for space weather because sheath fields are
among the main interplanetary origins of geomagnetic disturbances,
in particular during the maximum and descending phase of the solar
cycle. Preliminary analysis on the connections between this subset
of ICMEs and their associated CMEs will be presented.",
