abstract = ": One of the major concerns these days, in relation to the space
segment, is the mitigation of waste from missions that have
reached the end of their useful lives. The density of space
debris, located primarily in Low Earth Orbits (LEO), is growing
exponentially, making the space agencies around the world develop
policies to minimize these wastes. Within this perspective, the
objective of this work is to develop a thorough study of the
mitigation of space debris, coming from the nano-satellite
constellation for environmental data collection of the CONASAT
project, which is being developed by the National Institute for
Space Research - Northeast Regional Center (CRN-INPE), in
partnership with the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), seeking a
solution for the Brazilian System of Environmental Data Collection
based in nanosatellites. The orientation of the project follows
the rules of the European Cooperation for Space Standardization
(ECSS) and the mitigation of space debris follows the European
Code of Conduct for Space Debris Mitigation, of June 2004, which
foresees a maximum decay time either natural or forced, of 25
years after the lifetime of the mission. Within this perspective,
considering a natural decay due to restrictions of engineering and
safety and a lifetime of approximately two years, this study
analyzes several satellite configurations, evaluating different
geometric shapes, masses and altitudes that enable compliance with
the European Code of Conduct for Space Debris Mitigation as well
as the objectives proposed by the mission. The study was conducted
with the aid of several computational tools, including MATLAB, for
the analysis of the relationship between areas and masses of the
satellites, the Satellite Tool Kit (STK) for the analysis of the
orbital parameters involved and the Debris Assessment Software
(DAS) the latter supplied by the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) and used for computation of the decay time.
As a result, the work will provide data that will serve as
reference for defining the constructive aspects of the
constellation of the satellites, in regards to geometric and mass
limits as well as their orbital aspects.",
