abstract = "This paper presents an application of remote sensing tools, more
specifically, image processing for the control of the results of
human actions on the ground. The engineering geology works to
control and mitigate these actions. The digital image processing
provides the results that can help in decision making process in
this branch of science. The observation of the thalweg and the
lines of runoff can help on the determination of a probably
direction of a landslide occurrence. To deploy high-speed train on
the proposed stretch, along the lines that is designed, it would
be necessary to make a cut at the base of a talus deposit. The
talus deposits are a real landslide hazard, identify them and
indicate this direction of movements, shift more security for the
planning of engineering work. The water that penetrates the soil
can starts the landslide. CBERS 2B scenes were important in
identify a talus deposit in the studing area, and allow the
visualization of existing improvements around this deposit, as the
Funils Dam and the Presidente Dutra highway, that crosses the town
of Itatiaia in Rio de Janeiro. The directional filters are a
useful tool to indicate the motions direction of the taluss body,
and the digital elevation model (DEM) provided an easy viewing of
the phenomenon. The lines of runoff could be seen applying the
directional filter on CBERS 2B images. The Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index process (NDVI) could indicate the lines of runoff
after the aplication of directional filters.",
