abstract = "The Brita (or crushed rock), along with sand and gravel, is part
of the segment of the mining industry that produces more raw
feedstock or aggregates used in construction. Due to its low
value, the extraction of raw materials occurs in areas near the
center of consumption, thus minimizing transportation costs. This
fact can be observed in several quarries that are located near
urban centers. In Brazil, the production of crushed rock is the
second highest among the minerals, trailing only iron (DNPM,
2008). The crushed rock are quartz-feldspathic rocks that are
fragmented, this ensures material workability composition and
differential wear are essential for construction. With urban
sprawl quarries end up being surrounded by the growing city,
causing territorial disputes, environmental and especially with
regard to the impacts on population health. To solve such problems
is the recurrent use of a Geographic Information System (GIS),
which through the Remote Sensing and spatial information can
propose environment changes. In this study ratings were made from
images of the Mining Aratu quarry located in Salvador - BA. From
the images obtained were classified indexes that represent the
quality of each classification, as well as to observe the main
relations between the quarry and the environment that surrounds
                         it.",
