abstract = "The aim of this study was to use geotechnologies to quantify and
characterize the permanent preservation areas (PPA) in three
important coffee regions in the south region of the State of Minas
Gerais: S{\~a}o Sebasti{\~a}o do Para{\'{\i}}so, Machado and
Tr{\^e}s Pontas. Four categories of PPAs were identified:
drainage, springs, lakes and slopes steeper than 45 degrees. The
mapping of land use was done with satellite images from TM/Landsat
5 in two different dates. The GIS TerraView and SPRING were used.
The PPA was crossed with maps of land use for the two years
studied. The resulting maps were crossed to obtain the evolution
of land use in the PPA. All the study areas evaluated showed an
unsuitable land use/occupation around 60%. The greatest
degradation of PPA in the study areas was observed in the lakes
category. The results showed that in the South of Minas Gerais,
the Brazilian Forest Code is not respected as it should. However,
despite the extensive areas with coffee plantation, this crop
contributes relatively little to the degradation of areas of legal
protection (approximately 4%).",
