abstract = "We use the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
to characterize both the spectral and temporal variations in
reflectance and in vegetation indices of the Mixed Ombrophilous
and Deciduous Seasonal Forests from the Parque Estadual do Turvo
(PE Turvo) and Terra Ind{\'{\i}}gena do Guarita (TI Guarita).
The two study areas are located in northwest of Rio Grande do Sul
state, Brazil. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) were studied. A total of 241
MODIS 16-days composite images were used. Scatter plots between
the reflectance of the red and near infrared (NIR) bands, the NDVI
and the EVI were generated. Correlations for both forest areas
were computed and the magnitude of the relationships was
evaluated. To identify specific temporal features, Morlet-6
wavelet transformation was used. Results showed that PE Turvo
always presented a lower reflectance in the red and a higher in
the NIR than TI Guarita. The NDVI presented lower values for PE
Turvo due to the higher influence of red band reflectance on this
index when compared to EVI. In general, EVI was less sensitive to
the presence of bare soil in TI Guarita than NDVI. Finally,
wavelet analysis allowed identifying two periods where NDVI and
EVI spectra gave indications of physiological changes in
vegetation, which were coincident with lower precipitation. These
results are not conclusive and more studies are necessary in order
to improve the knowledge about those sub-tropical forests.",
