abstract = "The permanent preservation areas, specifically the riparian
vegetations are of fundamental importance and they work as a
filter and have the goal of keeping the water quality as well as
regulate some processes in nutrients cycling. The use of
information from remote sensing associated with the Geographic
Information System techniques have contributed to the monitoring
of these areas in a fast and efficient way. The municipal district
of Barreiras, located in the western region of Bahia, is known for
its fast commercial agriculture development, where the increase of
production is associated, most of the time, with the initiation of
new cultivating areas, in some places, even removing the riparian
vegetation, an important ecosystem that regulates the water
resources. This work proved that approximately 16% of all the
riparian vegetation of the municipal district was already
suppressed by the fast agricultural expansion, chiefly, by the
occupation of new areas for grain production. It is hoped that the
information here presented will be useful in demonstrating the
pressure these areas undergo, and besides that, it is mainly hoped
that there is an agreement about the importance of keeping and
recuperating these sensible and important ecosystems. In future
work, we intend to continue to monitor these areas in the
                         municipality.",
