abstract = "Although the Brazilian Savannah shows large flora richness, it has
been impacted by anthropogenic factors. The basin of the
Paran{\~a} river is geographically located within the Brazilian
Savannah region and Tocantins basin, which also shows a unique
natural biological richness that makes this area very important
for environmental conservation. This study conducted a
multi-temporal analysis of the land use and land cover change in
the Arraias municipality, State of Tocantins, located at the basin
of the Paran{\~a} river, in 2000, 2005, and 2010, based on remote
sensing imagery and geoprocessing tools. Based on it, unsupervised
classification (K-Means, a built in technique available in ENVI
4.6®) to map land use and land cover change over the study area.
The ENVI 4.6® built in technique K-means was used. The land use
and land cover classes adopted were: Deforestation, urban area,
rock exposures, water bodies, open and dense vegetation).
Furthermore, it was assessed impacts on natural vegetation (open
and dense vegetation types) using Normalized Difference Vegetation
Index (NDVI). These study results showed that the deforestation
did not increase substantially in the study area between 2000 and
2010. However, it has been observed that the remaining natural
vegetation is located in inaccessible, hilly, and rocky areas. The
vegetation index results indicated that degradation process did
not change either for the remaining natural vegetation. Finally,
the results of this study may help to improving the development
and conservation plans for the study region.",
