abstract = "Desertification is a generalized process of degradation that
impedes economic growth and social development, consequent of
deterioration of soils, water resources, vegetation, biodiversity
loss, allowing a decrease in the potential of environmental
resources. Over 60% of the state of Bahia is inserted in semi-arid
climate, characterized by a set of physical variables, biological
and social, which can trigger the desertification process. So
becomes relevance the recognition of relevant forms of use and
coverage of these spaces for the formulation of key indicators
which contribute to the expansion of this process. In this
perspective, this work has identified, mapped and analyzed the use
and coverage of land in the northern state, identified as area
susceptible to desertification. For this, the methodology is based
on digital image processing of Landsat and Modis, associated with
the interpretation of NDVI; pre-existing data and surveys of
primary data in the field. The results show that the soils and
vegetation are the most common resources and represent the basis
of sustainability of most activities performed by the local
population, which has led to their increasing exposure to erosive
agents. The nature of these processes relates to agriculture
associated with traditional management practices such as slash and
/ or indiscriminate burning of vegetation for pasture and crops,
extensive breeding of goats, sheep and cattle, which generate
overgrazing and soil compaction, capable of provide differential
erosion that undermines the permanence of rural activities, as
well as accentuate the rusticity of the vegetation.",
