abstract = "In Brazil, the marginal areas of the rivers are considered
Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs), provided by the Brazilian
Forest Code - Law 4.771/1965. This study aimed the application of
remote sensing for the spatialization, interpretation and analysis
of the land use and cover in the middle course of main channel
Paranapanemas river, in the Sao Paulo State Brazil. In this case,
because of the river have width between 50 and 200 meters, the PPA
must have 100 meters. In the analysis were used one digital
satellite image from HRC/CBERS 2B and digital satellite images
from TM/Landsat 5. It was supported by outside class work and
digital satellite images from Quickbird taken for the Google Earth
program. The images analyses and spot checks allowed the
identification of six different types of uses and covers prevalent
in PPAs: agriculture, natural regeneration, pasture, forest, farms
and urban area. It was observed that only 4,74% of the research
area are in consonance with that determined by the environmental
legislation in Brazil. The rest areas are in conflict between use
and proposed by Forest Code. The results of these analyses showed
that the satellite images and research methodology was used
allowed the precision interpretation of land use and cover in
                         study area.",
