abstract = "This study consisted in the application of GARP in modeling the
potential habitat of the maned wolf. The main objective was to
know the consequences of the actual habitat fragmentation for this
species. To build the models, 39 surveys with occurrence of the
maned wolf were compiled and the following digital maps were used:
temperature, precipitation, elevation data and NDVI of 1995 and
2000. Current models from 1995 show an expansion of the potential
distribution area and the were more concentrated in the
central-western and south-eastern regions of Brazil. The resulting
model for the year 2000 shows a potential expansion of wolf life
area for the north of Brazil. Models using data from 2000 present
a greater fragmentation and an overall reduction of the potential
area. Southeast of Brazil becomes an important area for future
conservation of the maned wolf and the S{\~a}o Paulo State with
only 0.95% of the original Cerrado areas still remain. This fact
can have serious impacts on the geographic distribution and on the
genetic variability of maned wolf populations.",
