abstract = "The Upper Acre River Basin of Bolivia, Brazil and Peru in the
center of southwestern Amazonia covers 7590 km2 and is one of the
few tri-national basins in Amazonia. The PRODES method developed
at INPE for the analysis of deforestation was adapted and tested
for use in measuring forest cover in the basin. The test used the
Landsat TM+ scene 002/67 of 10Aug02 and subsets. Deforested area
differed by 4% between analysis at INPE and the unmodified PRODES
method used for this study for the entire scene and <3.5% for the
subsets. The modification of the PRODES method included: 1) no
application of the prior deforestation mask; 2) spatial resolution
of 30 m in place of 60 m; and 3) minimum area of 0.36 ha rather
than 5.76 ha. The modified PRODES method when applied to the
entire Landsat scene resulted in a 14% small deforested area. In
comparison with a Quickbird scene of 21Jun02 used for accuracy
assessment, the modified PRODES method overestimated the forest
area by 16% and underestimated the deforested area by 4%. The
total area deforested in the trinational Upper Acre River Basin,
using the modified PRODES method was 13% (1014 km2) in 2002.",
