             abstract = "The growth of the sugarcane sector leads to an intense search for 
                         new agricultural areas apt for an expansion of sugarcane. In the 
                         state S{\~a}o Paulo, the Pontal do Paranapanema region is 
                         considered one of the last regions suitable for sugarcane 
                         expansion in a large scale. However, the insertion of this culture 
                         can come to modify the productive structures and the objectives of 
                         familiar agriculture in the settlements of the region. The aim of 
                         this project is to evaluate the effects of sugarcane production in 
                         the regions of agricultural settlements in the Pontal do 
                         Paranapanema region. The study is also considered to identify the 
                         suitable areas for sugarcane cultivation in the region and how 
                         these areas are distributed in relation to the agricultural 
                         settlements. By performing seated interviews with sugarcane 
                         producing farmers from the agricultural settlements the 
                         socio-economic effects caused by insertion of sugarcane are shown. 
                         Tools to process geographical information have been used to 
                         identifie the space distribution of suitable areas for 
                         agricultural expansion in relation to the settlements.",
