abstract = "The Cerrado biome, one of the largest and richest savanna
environments in the world, is also an endangered ecosystem due to
the severe land conversion. Therefore, it becomes mandatory a
systematic and operational monitoring of the vegetation cover.
Within this scope, in this study we evaluated the use of a linear
spectral mixture model for mapping the Cerrado physiognomies. The
model was applied to a dry season (July 2001) Landsat 7 ETM+ scene
(221/71) converted to reflectance values, for an area
corresponding to the Brasilia National Park. Three endmembers were
acquired directly from the image (vegetation, soil, and shadow)
and the respective derived images were capable of discriminating
the major Cerrado domains (herbaceous, arbustive, and
arborescent), with proportions ranging from 0.7 to 1.0. Currently,
we are evaluating a different set of endmembers and the use of
segmentation techniques as an attempt to more precisely map the
Cerrado physiognomies. In addition, the impact of atmospheric
contamination on the model output is being assessed as well.",
