abstract = "The north S{\~a}o Paulo State coast is characterized by a number
of fragile ecosystems such as sandy beaches, rock shore, tidal
flats, and mangroves. In the south portion of this coastline it is
located one of the largest Petrobr{\'a}s crude oil terminal. This
area is considered to be of high risk for oil spill with a known
historic of accidents dating back to the 70's. This paper presents
preliminary results on the merging of digital image products and
historic oil spill events data, which includes: a thematic base
map derived from digital integration of spectral and panchromatic
bands of ETM+ based on the use of IHS Transformation and
geodatabase modeling of historic oil spill events attributes using
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for rapid access
and query. This procedure has been successfully used to map oil
sensitive environments and highlights the potential for
operational use of remote sensing data and GIS in contingency
planning and assessment of oil spill effects on a tropical
                         environmental.",
