abstract = "This work has as main objective the mapping of the vegetable
covering in the northern area of the Tapaj{\'o}s National Forest,
located to the south of the city of Santar{\'e}mPar{\'a},
Brazil. For this purpose, over the 1999 image of sensor
TM-Landsat-5 the following digital processings were accomplished:
a linear spectral mixture model; segmentation and classification.
The application of the linear mixture model implemented in the
Georreferenced Information Processing System (SPRING/INPE), made
possible the transformation of bands 3, 4 and 5 in image-fractions
shade, soil and vegetation. On the shade image-fraction the
segmentation technique was applied by growth of areas and later
the Isoseg classifier was used to classify the segmented image.
The methodology employed showed useful in the distinction among
the areas of primary forest, deforested areas and areas in process
of secondary regeneration. As end result we present a map of the
types of vegetable covering of the studied area.",
