abstract = "Advanced in remote sensing technology have expanded opportunities
to characterize the dynamics of the vegetation in the temporal
domain, which frequently have obtained better results as the
spatial, spectral or the radiometric domains. The environmental
monitoring of the Amazon region need techniques that allow the
detection of changes occurred in short periods. The objective of
this paper is to assess the application of harmonic analysis to
MODIS vegetation index time series for environmental monitoring.
16-day EVI composites (250 meters) from January 2001 to December
2003 were used. The harmonic analysis algorithm was implemented in
IDL (Interactive Data Language). The harmonic analysis proved to
be a very useful tool for time series analyses. It is recommended
the use of more than one harmonic, since the time frequencies
present in the series may vary within a given study area, as
function of the land use dynamic.",
