             abstract = "Images from the Landsat-TM satellite taken in 1986 and 1991 and 
                         aerial photographs were used to map and register the changes that 
                         occurred between 1986 and 1991 in the Nazar{\'e} and S{\~a}o 
                         Sebasti{\~a}o communities. These comparisons were made in order 
                         to monitor and plan the use and management of the communities' 
                         resources. The results show that during the first five years (1981 
                         to 1986) no significant changes occurred in the conversion of 
                         primary forest to other uses. The rate of deforestation during the 
                         subsequent five years period, however, was approximately 200 
                         ha/yr. If all of the local conditions remain constant, all of 
                         these communities' primary forest will disappear in only 35 
                         years.",
