             abstract = "Five classification algorithms - image thresholding, unsupervised 
                         and supervised region classifiers, maximum likelihood 
                         classification of vegetation, soil and shade bands, and of TM 
                         bands 3, 4 and 5 - were tested for classification of TM imagery 
                         for mapping of deforested areas. Deforestation included pasture, 
                         annual and perennial plantations and secondary vegetation. All 
                         five algorithms resulted in excellent levels of agreement with a 
                         reference map of deforestation ( > 0.8), showing that digital 
                         classification can be feasible for deforestation surveys.",
