abstract = "The use of tools seeking to simulate the environmental changes
that occur in the basin watershed area, due to the use and
occupation of land, is critical in the planning of natural
resources management. Thus, the goal of this study was to
estimate, from the SWAT model, the amount of sediments in the
Lower Basin Watershed of Rio S{\~a}o Francisco (BHSRSF). This
model estimates soil loss by Universal Soil Loss Modified Equation
(MEUPS), which relates the breakdown and sediment delivery with
the runoff. Geospatial information for the visualization of the
main soil types and their respective parameters were obtained
after sampling in the study area were used, followed by laboratory
analysis. The simulations performed in this study comprise the
period from 1993 to 2010, and the result, considering different
land uses, enabled the identification of areas with greatest
potential for sediment yield, predominantly where the physical
surface characteristics of these areas have provided a high rate
of runoff. Additionally, strong relationship between rainfall and
sediment delivery was observed. The susceptibility to erosion for
different classes of soil is also one of the constraints in the
breakdown of particles resulting from erosion. Thus, the SWAT
model presented satisfactory performance when considering the
hydrological conditions in the semiarid region of northeastern
                         Brazil.",
