abstract = "The knowledge of rural environments occupation is important to
understand the urbanization spread to peripheral rural areas.
Campinas is the 3rd country metropolitan region in wealth
production and lately has been losing rural space to the expansion
of urban and industrial areas. The aim of this study is to
evaluate the use of land in Campinas municipality, in two dates,
considering rural areas as priority. To realize it, Campinas
WorldView2 images of 2012 were analyzed and compared to results
obtained in 2003. Data visual interpretation was performed and
results in classification of use and land cover images. The
analysis considered five classes: urbanized areas (AU), areas with
predominantly herbaceous vegetation (VH), areas with predominantly
arboreal vegetation (VA), areas with crops (AL), areas with
forestry (AS), bare soil (SE) and water (CA). In rural areas, in
2012, the class that stood out was VH with 52.19%, following AL
                         16.82%, VA -16.63%, AS 6.26%, AU - 5.41%, CA 1.63% e SE - 1.07%.
Compared to 2003, there was a built environment increase of 51.84%
in rural areas. The results showed that there is a tendency to
increase the presence of buildings in the rural area (AU),
occupying locals with herbaceous and tree vegetation, but with
size still insignificant compared to the extension of urban area.
Further field studies are needed to validate the presented results
and to understand if the increase in built-up areas is concerned
solely with the presence of condominiums or other elements such as
                         logistics are influencing.",
