abstract = "MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data provide
coverage of large areas and high periodicity. These
characteristics are fundamental to analyze strategic agricultural
crops in Brazil, such as sugarcane. The harmonic analysis can be
used for the study of time-series of remote sensing data in order
to evaluate the temporal behavior of vegetation indices. The
visual representation of the harmonic amplitude and phase terms
can assist the image interpretation process through a color
combination. However, as the phase term is quantified on a
circular scale, it is recommended to carry out a color
transformation into the HLS (hue, lightness, saturation) space, as
the hue component is inherently circular, which provides a smooth
visual transition effect between the cycles. In this context, the
objective of this study was to analyze of the sugarcane
cultivation in S{\~a}o Paulo State using harmonic analysis
applied to EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) time-series data
throughout 10 cropping years, from October 2001 to September 2011,
using the HLS representation of the harmonic terms. The results
showed that the sugarcane cultivation in S{\~a}o Paulo State
presented spatial patterns that match the vegetation development,
which is consistent with the variability of the seasonal rainfall
which affects the maximum EVI period. The HLS representation of
harmonic terms has showed to be an effective tool for visual
interpretation of vegetation cycles.",
