             abstract = "This article presents the preliminary results of a methodological 
                         development to identify, discriminate and map crops and 
                         associations of agricultural crops grown in the state of Mato 
                         Grosso, Brazil, during a specific cropping year. There are many 
                         origins and motivations demanding information about spatial and 
                         temporal dynamic of the national agricultural activity. Annual 
                         crops estimations, pricing, environmental impacts and public 
                         policies formulation for the agricultural sector are just some of 
                         the most obvious activities related to the benefit of the 
                         generation of more reliable and temporally synchronized data with 
                         the development of agricultural activities in the field. Despite 
                         the limitations of the coarse spatial resolution of MODIS images, 
                         its potential, based on the acquisition and provision of daily 
                         images, has not been exhausted. In this context, the objective of 
                         this study was to analyze annual crop areas in the State of Mato 
                         Grosso using harmonic analysis applied to NDVI time-series data 
                         throughout the 2008/2009 cropping year using the HLS 
                         representation of the harmonic terms. The results of this method, 
                         applied to different regions and backgrounds lands, have showed 
                         the potential of MODIS time-series in the activity of annual crop 
                         types mapping, or association of crop types, through the visual 
                         interpretation of HLS representation of the harmonic terms.",
