                         objetivo caracterizar estatisticamente a precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o
                         {\'{\i}}ndices pluviom{\'e}tricos.
apresenta pouco total acumulado, curta dura{\c{c}}{\~a}o e
pequena intensidade.
ABSTRACT: The
                         Alc{\^a}ntara Rocket Launching Center (CLA; 2° 22S, 44º 23W)
plays an important role in aerospace research activities in
Brazil, and so it is of interest to study the precipitation
systems over the CLA region. This work aims at statistically
characterizing the precipitation in the CLA by using hourly
                         precipitation data collected from September 1993 to March 2007;
characterizing the systems and patterns associated to rainfall
events in the CLA; and evaluating the regional model MM5 skill in
simulating the rainfall events in 2005 and 2006. The statistical
characterization ratified that the rainy (dry) season was well
defined during March and April (September to November), when the
total monthly precipitation was maximum (minimum). Mainly in the
rainy season, the majority of rain events showed small amount of
total rainfall, short duration and light intensity. By using NCEP
reanalysis data, and outgoing longwave radiation and brightness
temperature data, the criteria to identify large, meso, and local
scale systems associated with precipitation over CLA in 2005 and
2006 were defined. The results showed that 40% of the
precipitation events were associated with large scale systems,
mainly the Intertropical Convergence Zone. About 60% (40%) of the
precipitation events over CLA are due to stratiform (convective)
processes. In simulations using the MM5 regional model for 2005
and 2006, the results showed that the model overestimated the
monthly precipitation amount and number of events all year
