abstract = "We study numerically the nonlinear response and sliding friction
behavior in a phase field crystal model for adsorbed layers in
presence of thermal fluctuations 1;2. The model describes the
layer as a continuous density field in presence of a pinning
potential and external driving force allowing for both elastic and
plastic deformation, and inertial effects. At low temperatures and
in presence of inertial effects we find that the velocity response
of an initially commensurate layer shows hysteresis with dynamical
melting and freezing transitions for increasing and decreasing
applied forces at different critical values. The main features of
the nonlinear response are similar to the results obtained
previously with molecular dynamics simulations of particles 3;4.
However, the dynamical melting and freezing mechanisms are
signifficantly different corresponding to nucleations of stripes
rather than closed domains. 1J.A.P. Ramos, E. Granato, C.V. Achim,
