abstract = "At a global scale, precipitation is one of the best predictors of
spatial distribution of the main vegetation types. At a regional
scale, the influence of precipitation is less direct because of
the involvement of other intervening variables. The aim of this
study was to assess the seasonality of precipitation and
vegetation (using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-NDVI
and Leaf Area Index-LAI), and the relationships between these
variables in two regions of the Cerrado biome (savanna), north and
central, with different degrees of human disturbance, natural and
modified, respectively. We also investigated the relationship of
the following pair of variables: precipitation and NDVI,
precipitation and LAI, and NDVI and LAI; by fitting curves to a
regression model using time series from 2001 to 2009 for the three
variables (precipitation, NDVI e LAI) in the two study areas. The
results show significant correlation between NDVI and
precipitation being higher in the modified region (R2: 0.3724)
than in natural region (R2: 0.3717), partial correlation between
precipitation and LAI with significant correlation only in the
modified region (R2: 0.3345), and significant correlation between
NDVI and LAI, which is higher in the modified (R2: 0.9288) than in
natural region (R2: 0.5493).These results indicate that
precipitation is one of the main variables that influence the
pattern of spatio-temporal distribution of the Cerrado vegetation.
However, this influence (of precipitation on vegetation) is
differentiated, being more direct in areas with dominance of
grassy-herbaceous and shrub layer and even wide agricultural areas
with rainfall dependence (modified region) than in areas with
dominance of tree layer (natural region), where the dependence of
precipitation is less direct. Finally, we also analyzed the
relationship between NDVI (observational data) and NPP (modeled)
that will be presented in further work on {"}Seasonal variability
of climate and vegetation in the Cerrado biome: II. Representation
with the biosphere model IBIS.",
