The estimation of rainfall rate (R) by weather radar is an
essential tool for weather monitoring and nowcasting. It is
obtained from the reflectivity (Z) measured by the radar, which
corresponds to the energy that is backscattered by hydrometeors,
and adopting a suitable Z-R relationship. Particularly,
reflectivity values may present inconsistencies due to weather
radar beam blockage by natural or artificial obstacles. A number
of techniques for identification and correction of reflectivity in
such blind zones subjected to blockage have been proposed, which
are based in the interpolation of reflectivity measures for
different elevations and azimuths of the same radar or employ the
superposition of scans of different radars. However, there is not
such superposition or interpolation may not be possible for a
larger blockage. This work proposed an alternative methodology for
the identification and correction of radar beam blockage. The
identification aims to explore the signature that such blockages
leave in the images of accumulated reflectivity, using statistical
analysis to identify azimuths with minimum accumulated values. On
the other hand, the treatment of the identified areas with
reflectivity underestimation is accomplished by filling these
faults with estimates obtained from data of atmospheric electric
discharges, through a factor that correlates the flash density
with reflectivity of weather radar in unaffected areas. This study
used data from the Almenara (MG), Jaraguari (MT) and Santa Teresa
(ES) weather radars. As well as lightning data made by the
networks BrasilDAT and RINDAT for the years 2014 to 2016. The
identification of beam blockages was evaluated by comparison with
a method that identifies beam blockages based on Digital Elevation
Model (DEM), already the estimates of reflectivity with the IZLR
factor were compared to radar measurements in non-affected areas.
The proposed method for beam blockage identification presented
superior performance when compared to the MDE method, since it
allowed to identify all azimuths with beam blockage fraction above
20% and to identify other areas in the Jaraguari and Santa Teresa
radars that did not result from the interaction with the
topography. In relation to the reflectivity/precipitation
estimation, the IZLR presented better performance using BrasilDAT
network lightning data, obtaining a mean correlation given by
Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) in the range (0.28 - 0.62),
bias (0.83 - 0.97), RMSE (3.69 - 18.09) and Pearson correlation
coefficient (0.50 - 0.71) whereas RINDAT showed MCC in the range
(0.02 - 0.62), bias of (0.24 - 1.18), RMSE (4.20 - 14.25) and
Pearson correlation coefficient (0.01 - 0.62). The fields obtained
with IZLR showed good capacity to fill big blind areas such as
that occurring in the Northwest region of the Santa Teresa weather
radar, although its accuracy and spatial distribution are directly
influenced by the availability of record of occurrence of
discharges in the affected and not affected areas of radar.",
