abstract = "Considering their influence upon lower trophic levels,
crocodilians could be said to play a vital role in maintaining
ecosystem structure and function. In the Amazon Basin, spectacled
caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and black caiman (Melanosuchus niger)
have unique aspects of natural history that create challenges for
their conservation, such as the negative impact of commercial
exploitation and indiscriminate hunting on them. Over the last few
years, conservation initiatives have been launched to raise
peoples awareness of how to manage them in their natural habitat.
Compared to other life-stages, neonates and reproducing females
are considered the two most vulnerable ones. Since their prolonged
maternal care and long stay surrounding the original nest, all
efforts should be concentrated on protecting nesting habitats.
This review aims to provide an overview of Amazonian caiman
nesting ecology with the purpose of identifying which
environmental variables are likely to influence females on their
choices of nesting sites.",
