abstract = "The Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS),
coupled to the dynamic vegetation model - General Energy and Mass
Transfer Model (GEMTM) was used to determine the effects of
land-use change and increased CO2 concentrations on the
hydrological cycle of the Amazon basin for two scenarios: (i)
Land-use cover Amazon Basin for the year 2000 and current climate
initialized and driven by boundary conductions form the Community
Climate System Model (CCSM3) atmospheric-ocean model and (ii)
Predicted land-use cover for the year 2050 and emission scenario
(SRES A2) for 2050 by CCSM3. The combined effect of deforestation
and increased CO2 concentrations, including the interaction among
the processes, is an increase in the temperature of 3 to 4 degrees
                         C and a decrease in the basin-average precipitation of 30%. A
Positive Feedback Mechanism (PFM) on the hydrological cycle was
observed, in which, changes in the regional circulation (moisture
convergence) and evapotranspiration led to the decrease in
precipitation in Amazon Basin. This mechanism is worrying because
it can produce instability in the system and consequently, lead to
changes in natural ecosystems of the Amazon. This is particularly
relevant since the natural ecosystems do not exhibit great
adaptability to the magnitude of climate change on such short time
                         scales.",
