abstract = "RESUMO: Eventos severos de tempo meteorol{\'o}gico normalmente
geram grandes impactos s{\'o}cio-econ{\^o}micos e desastres
munic{\'{\i}}pios ga{\'u}chos. O evento foi analisado com base
nos dados do sat{\'e}lite GOES-12, imagens do radar
meteorol{\'o}gico de Santiago/RS, dados de rean{\'a}lises do
NCEP e dados de pluvi{\^o}metros. Totais pluviom{\'e}tricos
convencionais do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET).
Somente em Cruz Alta/RS e Passo Fundo/RS choveu 123,5 e 96,0
mil{\'{\i}}metros, respectivamente. No mesmo dia no norte do
Estado, precisamente nos munic{\'{\i}}pios de Soledade/RS, Cruz
Alta/RS e Passo Fundo/RS, foram observados, pelas
respectivamente.
atividade convectiva.
ABSTRACT: Severe weather events usually causes large
socio-economic and immeasurable disasters, such as loss of human
lives. In this case study we analyzed an event of extreme rainfall
occurred on the state of Rio Grande do Sul, during 18 and 19 th
September; 2012, to prove the occurrence of high volumes of rain,
hail, strong winds and lightning on various Rio Grande do Sul
municipalities. The event was analyzed based on GOES-12 satellite
images, weather radar in Santiago/RS, NCEP reanalysis and rain
gauge data. Anomalous rainfall accumulations were recorded on
September 19th, 2012, by conventional and automatic weather
stations from the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET). Only
in Cruz Alta/RS and Passo Fundo/RS it rained 123.5 and 96.0 mm,
respectively. On the same day in the northern part of the state,
precisely in the municipalities of Soledade/RS, Cruz Alta/RS and
Passo Fundo/RS, it was observed by automatic weather stations
INMET, wind gust values of 118.4, 92.9 and 81.4 km/h ,
respectively. Through the analysis of images from GOES satellite
and Santiago/RS weather radar, it was observed an intensification
in the formation of supercells, confirmed by radar reflectivity
and low temperatures at the top of the clouds around -70 °C. On
radar images (MAXCAPPI 400 km) from Santiago/RS it was noticed a
convective activity with strong to very strong intensity, with
reflectivity peaks of 60-65 dBZ in some isolated locations. Based
on these images, the event lasted at least three hours with
intense convective activity. The cause for severe weather was the
deepening of a low pressure system over Argentina (cyclogenesis)
which originated an extratropical cyclone associated with a strong
cold front that moved over a warm atmosphere in the south of
Brazil, resulting in a lot of damage by winds and hail.",
