abstract = "A data assimilation study is performed to assessthe impact of
observations on analyses over a usuallydata sparse region. The
study uses radiosonde data takenduring the South America Low-Level
Jet Experiment(SALLJEX) (November 2002-February 2003), which
fo-cused on the region east of the Andes Mountains fromwestern
Brazil southward to central Argentina. This re-gion has a high
frequency of occurrence of a northwest-erly Low-Level Jet (LLJ)
and Mesoscale Convective Sys-tems (MCS). A better understanding of
the vertical andspatial atmospheric structures associated with
these fea-tures is necessary in order to validate existing global
and regional models, and ultimately to improve forecasts and
simulations on a variety of time scales.",
