abstract = "The relationships between monthly rainfall categories (below,
near, and above normal) in South Brazil and Pacific SSTs in the
Nifio 3.4 region, were studied. Three rainfall homogeneous groups
(Southern, Continental, and Coastal) were defmed in the region by
cluster analysis using Ward's method. The Relative Operational
Characteristics score (ROC) was used to assess the significant
relationships in 3 x 3 contingency tables. The El Mijo events,
classified according to Tremberth's criterion were significantly
associated to above normal rainfall in the region, during the
Austral Winter and Spring. This relationships is also observed in
Summer in the Continental group. La Nifia events and below normal
rainfall relationships were only significant in Spring, and in the
Coastal and Southem groups.",
