method (MT) seeks to obtain the distribution of electrical
conductivity within the Earth through the use of naturally
occurring time variations of electric and magnetic fields
simultaneously measured at the Earth's surface. Data processing
derives transfer functions between these electromagnetic fields,
which are often contaminated with noise from natural or man-made
sources. A new approach for time series processing is proposed
here that consists in obtaining the transfer functions through the
least median of squares (LMS) instead of the classical procedure
of minimizing the root mean squares (RMS). A computer code was
written in C++ and tested in MT data collected at three stations
in the south-central Brazil. Results were compared with those
obtained by a robust algorithm commonly used in MT studies and
with theoretical results derived from the Hilbert transform that
correlates the two main MT transfer functions (apparent
resistivity and phase). These preliminary tests were quite
promising. In some cases, the results from the proposed technique
show a significant improvement in the transfer function estimates,
although at other cases the results were not as efficient.",
