             abstract = "The maintenance of summer atmospheric circulation over South 
                         America is studied from the point of view of balance of vorticity 
                         and kinetic energy. Five years of daily global NMC data (1 Nov. 
                         1985- 31 Jan. 1991) at 12 UTC are used. The balance of vorticity 
                         including the transients was not well defined. The balance of 
                         kinetic energy showed that the energy cycle over South America 
                         during the summer is: EPD for Kc through the term -cÑ2f and, Kc 
                         for Ky mainly through the term ÑyÑc .An examination of the 
                         periodicities in the energy parameters shows several oscillations 
                         annual cycle, 30-60 days oscillations, and show short period 
                         oscillations suggesting the presence of transients. Over South 
                         America the interactions between seasonal and intraseasonal 
                         variations were more dominants. The local kinetic energy balance 
                         showed the role of the transients in the region of trough over 
                         South Atlantic. Over Bolivian High the interaction between 
                         seasonal and intraseasonal variations are important. Large 
                         interactions occur near the region of South Atlantic Convergence 
                         Zone (ZCAS). RESUMO: A manuten{\c{c}}{\~a}o da 
                         circula{\c{c}}{\~a}o atmosf{\'e}rica no ver{\~a}o sobre a 
                         Am{\'e}rica do Sul {\'e} estudada do ponto de vista dos 
                         balan{\c{c}}os de vorticidade e de energia cin{\'e}tica. 
                         Considerou-se 5 anos de dados analisados di{\'a}rios (1 nov. 1985 
                         - 31 jan. 1991), globais, obtidos do NMC, as 12 UTC. O 
                         balan{\c{c}}o de vorticidade incluindo os transientes n{\~a}o 
                         foi muito definido. O balan{\c{c}}o de energia cin{\'e}tica 
                         mostrou que o ciclo de energia sobre a Am{\'e}rica do Sul, no 
                         ver{\~a}o, se d{\'a} da seguinte forma: EPD para Kc, 
                         atrav{\'e}s do termo -cÑ2f e, de Kc para Ky, principalmente 
                         atrav{\'e}s do termo de intera{\c{c}}{\~a}o ÑyÑc. O estudo de 
                         periodicidades nos par{\^a}metros de energia cin{\'e}tica 
                         mostrou v{\'a}rios tipos de oscila{\c{c}}{\~o}es: o ciclo 
                         anual, de 30-60 dias e oscila{\c{c}}{\~o}es de curto 
                         per{\'{\i}}odo, sugerindo a presen{\c{c}}a de transientes. Na 
                         Am{\'e}rica dos Sul as intera{\c{c}}{\~o}es entre as escalas 
                         sazonal e a intrasazonal foram mais dominantes. A enegia 
                         cin{\'e}tica local mostrou o papel dos transientes na regi{\~a}o 
                         do Cavado sobre o Atl{\^a}ntico Sul e das intera{\c{c}}{\~o}es 
                         sazonais e intrasazonais na regi{\~a}o da Alta da 
                         Bol{\'{\i}}via. Maiores intera{\c{c}}{\~o}es ocorreram 
                         pr{\'o}ximo ou na regi{\~a}o das Zonas de Converg{\^e}ncia do 
                         Atl{\^a}ntico Sul (ZCAS).",
