the synoptic features of the one case of heavy rainfall occurred
in the semiarid interior zone of Northeast Brazil (NEB) is
studied. A Rainfall Index (PI) was defined as the area-average of
P and built for northern (7ºS-10ºS; 37ºW-44ºW) and southern
(10ºS-15ºS; 40ºW-45ºW) sectors of this region. Using this index we
choose the heavy rainfall event occurred during the period from 16
to 26 December 1989, because this event was the longest and it
happened over the all this region. The database utilized are
gridded daily Precipitation (P) analysis data in Brazil (10ºS-40ºS
                         and 30ºW-80ºW) from 1 January 1977 to 31 December 1997, with
resolution 1º lat x 1º lon, produced by Climate Prediction Center
(CPC); daily mean of u, v and Z at 17 pressure levels (1000 hPa to
10 hPa), with resolution of 2.5º lat X 2.5º lon, obtained from the
National Centers for Environment Prediction/National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) and daily mean of Emergent
Outgoing Longwave Radiation (ROLE) and anomalies of ROLE to
December 1989, obtained from the Climate Diagnostics Center (CDC).
During this event, several synoptic systems acted in the NEB
(i.e., South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS), Intertropical
Convergence Zone (ITCZ), upper tropospheric cyclonic vortex
(VCAN), trough of short wave at high levels, between others) but
their interactions can explain the occurrence of heavy rainfall in
this region in the period of 16-26 December 1989.",
