abstract = "The sugarcane crop has largely expanded its cultivated area during
the last six years in order to meet the current and future
worldwide demand for ethanol. Since the crop year of 2003/04 the
National Institute for Space Research (INPE) is carrying out a
project to map cultivated sugarcane areas using medium resolution
remote sensing satellite images. Sugarcane thematic maps are
yearly elaborated with the classes of sugarcane available for
harvest including newly cultivated areas (sugarcane expansion) and
sugarcane fields that are being renewed and, therefore, not
available for harvest in that specific crop year. The objective of
this paper is to analyze the evolution of the sugarcane cultivated
area in S{\~a}o Paulo State from crop year 2003/04 to 2008/09.
The analysis was performed at a Regional Administrative level that
comprises several municipalities within a particular region.
S{\~a}o Paulo State is by far the major sugarcane producer in
Brazil. It experienced a 73% increase in available area for
harvest during the analyzed period reaching a total of 4.45
million ha in the crop year of 2008/09. The Regional
Administrations located in the North-Central of S{\~a}o Paulo are
traditional sugarcane production regions with very dense area of
sugarcane cultivation and, therefore, with less potential for area
expansion. Conversely, the Regional Administrations located in the
West-North of S{\~a}o Paulo are regions of traditional cattle
producers with great potential of available area for sugarcane
expansion and, therefore, experienced the greatest sugarcane
expansion.",
