abstract = "This paper shows how the spring tools could be used to investigate
propagation problems in wide area networks for wireless
communications. Spring adds to an especial designed propagation
program represents a powerful way to perform coverage studies in
wireless network communications. The method presented here was
developed to avoid the high cost and complexity of non free
softwares. Spring is not a specific program to work with
telecommunication problems. In this way, was necessary to create a
program to get from and pass to information to the spring in an
interactive mode. The special designed program imports
geoprocessing data from the spring for a target area. The results
from the propagation program are exported to the spring to
evaluate the coverage using a specific propagation model. This is
a low cost method to study the performance of different
propagation models in the wireless coverage analysis. To reduce
the development cost we decided to use only free programing tools
as Octave. Octave is a free version of Matlab (is not equal) that
works in a similar way and run under Linux. The Linux was our
choice as development platform. An application for WiMax network
was carried out to evaluate the coverage area over a small region
in Brazil. The results showed that the technique proposed here is
able to perform well coverage prediction for wireless
                         communication.",
