abstract = "Brazil is the world´s largest citrus producer with more than 800
thousand hectares of cultivated area generating around 400
thousands jobs. According to the Brazilian official statistics
S{\~a}o Paulo State has more than 650 thousand hectares of
cultivated citrus area. However, this statistic is based on
traditional and subjective methods. Therefore, the present work
has the objective to propose an alternative method based on medium
spatial resolution remote sensing imagery interpretation and on
Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies to provide an
objective and reliable agricultural statistic on cultivated citrus
area in S{\~a}o Paulo State for the crop year of 2007.
Multitemporal images from the TM sensor onboard of Landsat-5
satellite were digitally processed and visually interpreted on the
computer screen using the Spring software which is a GIS with
images processing capabilities. The resultant thematic map
provided the spatial distribution of cultivated citrus and allowed
calculating the cultivated area at local and regional levels. It
was not possible to distinguish among different citrus types.
Further studies need to be performed to evaluate the mapping
accuracy and the precision of the agricultural statistic on
cultivated citrus. Compared to the official statistic the present
result was underestimated by 11.3% which might be partially
related to the sugarcane expansion on citrus plantations and due
to the fact that newly planted citrus areas are difficult to be
identified on remote sensing images.",
