abstract = "Agricultural forecasts estimates of soybean crop need to be
accurate and timely in order to be adequately used by decision
makers from the agribusiness sector of this commodity. Although
soybean crop is cultivated under high level of agricultural
practices its area estimation in Brazil is mainly based on
traditional and subjective methods. The main goal of this study
was to derive a method to estimate soybean crop area using EVI
(Enhanced Vegetation Index) time-series from the MODIS sensor
onboard of the Terra satellite. This research was carried out for
223 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul State during the period of
five crop years (2002/03 to 2007/08). The estimated soybean areas,
at municipal level, using the EVI time-series, were compared to
the official statistics provided by IBGE using regression
analysis. Regression analysis and statistics of results are
encouraging. The overall results shown a slightly overestimation
obtained with this approach. EVI/MODIS estimated area explained
94% of the municipal soybean crop area variation indicating that
it has great potential to accurately estimate municipal soybean
area with the advantage of providing anticipated information prior
to the soybean harvest. This method must be evaluated over another
regions.",
