abstract = "The study purpose is to evaluate the usability of the GPR (Ground
Penetrating Radar) in detection of compacted soil layers, as well
the possibility of application in studies of subsurface research.
The searches were carried out in two areas used for several years
with the sugar cane growing, which have received the same
management over time. Soil samples were obtained with volumetric
cylinder in depths of 0-0,10 m, 0.10-0.20 m; 0.20-0.30 m;
0,30-0,40 m 0.40 at 0,50 meters over three transept by area, one
referring to the lines and two lines. The results obtained were
applied to semi-empirical equation of Crim for obtaining the
possible outcome that would be determined by geophysical GPR. The
values generated by georadar for the two areas had to be close of
those obtained by the Crim equation for the treatments, when
considering the package of ground to the range of 0.40 to 0.50
meters. However, the more superficial layers of soil could not be
assessed due to technical limitations of equipment associated
physical and chemical conditions of soil, which undermined the
reflections. The GPR was able to detect density differences in the
profile, when confronted with between rows, but it was not
possible to determine which would be compacted layers. The results
showed that the radar can be effective in some soil studies when
combined with other methods, but alone this technique needs
further studies in addition to improvements by the equipment.",
