abstract = "The present work uses satellite imaging with the aim of obtain the
mapping of sugar-cane culture in the city of Campo Florido,
localized at Tri{\^a}ngulo Mineiro region in the west of Minas
Gerais state, Brazil, enclosing a 1,324 Km2 area. The software
SPRING® 4.3 was used for digital image processing and maps
generation. All the images used in this mapping was gathered at
08/30/2007 and 08/16/2008 by Landsat 5 satellite, TM sensor, bands
3-4-5, orbit/point 221/074. A field work was done aiming to obtain
the interpretation key of the images, gathering coordinates of
sampled areas occupied by sugar-cane with the use of a GPS
navigation. The maps was done by visual interpretation process of
the images with SPRING® 4.3. At the end of this work was possible
to identify and map four categories of sugar-cane in the images:
                         middle-high, remodeled, just-planted and just-harvested. The
results showed that between August 2007 and August 2008 the
occupied area by sugar-cane cultures has increased by 8.4%,
growing from 375Km2 to 450Km2. The visual analysis also indicates
that this growth has occurred on the west portion of the city.",
