abstract = "Brazil in the largest sugar-cane producer of the world and has a
privileged position to attend the national and world´s sugar and
alcohol needs. This fact shows the importance of sugar-cane to the
country and also the necessity of operational systems that can
monitor the vegetation growth through the crop yield on a regional
scale. The main purpose of this study was to create models to
evaluate how NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and
WRSI (Water Requirements Satisfaction Index) behave and relate to
each other, and also to foresee these indexes from April to
December of 2007, in Sao Paulo state productive areas. All images
used were automatically processed by NAVPRO system which generated
radiometric and geometrical corrected images. With all images
corrected, maximum value composition of monthly NDVI and temporal
NDVI profile were generated. The agroclimatic conditions through
the period of analyses were describe by WRSI. To describe it a
water balance was made and maximum and real evapotranspiration
values were calculated on a 10-day period. The models generated by
multivariate time series analyses were well adjusted. For all
models, WRSI precedes NDVI, it means that NDVI depends on WRSI on
every municipal district and the forecasting made was within the
reliable interval, and then results became satisfactory. The
forecasting models developed allow to use the previous crop yield
results as basis to estimation of spectral and agroclimatic crop
                         yield parameters.",
