propulsive systems requires the specification of a large number of
parameters and several iterative calculations. Optimization
techniques allow accelerating the determination of the ideal
configuration of propulsive systems and, thus, makes it possible
to reduce the time and cost of the project. This work aims to
describe a multi-objective optimization tool applicable to liquid
bipropellant propulsion systems. These systems feature high
propulsive performance and thrust control capability. The
optimization method is based on the NSGA II algorithm, which uses
a technique based on a genetic algorithm, establishing as
objectives the maximization of the specific impulse and the
minimization of the total mass of the propulsive system. For this,
predictive models were generated and evaluated through machine
learning techniques, aiming at predicting the mass of liquid
propellants and, thus, optimizing the complete system. The tool is
capable of increasing the performance of solutions, through
genetic operators, and meeting mission restrictions. As a case
study, it was proposed the optimization of a liquid bipropellant
propulsive system, using ethanol and liquid oxygen as propellants,
to act as an alternative to the third stage of the Brazilian
microsatellite launch vehicle (VLM). The results showed that the
proposed algorithm was efficient, generating a set of 100
optimized thrusters, all lighter and with higher specific impulse
values than the current rocket engine used as the third stage of
the VLM.",
