abstract = "The anual cycle and rainfall anomalies of the Southern Brazil
Region are studied. Also, the relationship between the anomalies
with the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon are
examined using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. It
was found that the ENSO plays an important role in the interanual
rainfall variability in the region. During warm episodes (El Nino)
the region is affected with positive anomalies (flooding) during
almost all months of the year. The cold episodes (La Nina) are
associated with droughts mostly during October-November and from
June to August of the year following the episode. Although the
ENSO has an evident role in the rainfall anomalies in the Southern
Region, a significant fraction of these anomalies occurs
independently of the phenomenon. Canonical Coorelation Analysis
(CCA) is used to investigate the relationship between the tropical
and southern portions of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, through
the sea surface temperature (SST), and the rainfall anomalies in
the Southern Region. It was found that during December-February
period both oceans are important to determine the rainfall
variability; during March-May and June-August seasons the Pacific
Ocean conditions seem to be most determinant. On the other hand,
during September-November season the conditions prevailing in the
Atlantic SST seem to be crucial to explain the rainfall
variability in the Southern Brazil Region.",
