                         clim{\'a}tica do Sistema de Mon{\c{c}}{\~a}o da Am{\'e}rica do 
                         Sul (SMAS), assim como suas rela{\c{c}}{\~o}es com as fases da 
                         Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Decadal do Pac{\'{\i}}fico (ODP) e 
                         investigar as rela{\c{c}}{\~o}es deste sistema com os demais 
                         sistemas de mon{\c{c}}{\~a}o. A t{\'e}cnica de 
                         Fun{\c{c}}{\~o}es Ortogonais Emp{\'{\i}}ricas (FOE) foi 
                         aplicada no campo de anomalias do desvio da m{\'e}dia anual do 
                         desvio da m{\'e}dia zonal do potencial de velocidade (X*') no 
                         n{\'{\i}}vel de 200hPa do per{\'{\i}}odo de 1948-1999 para 
                         investigar as caracter{\'{\i}}sticas de tal variabilidade. Foram 
                         utilizados dados m{\'e}dios mensais de temperatura da 
                         superf{\'{\i}}cie do mar, temperatura do ar, press{\~a}o ao 
                         n{\'{\i}}vel do mar, velocidade vertical em 500hPa, {\'a}gua 
                         precipit{\'a}vel e fun{\c{c}}{\~a}o de corrente em 200hPa. Com 
                         essas vari{\'a}veis, foram feitas an{\'a}lises de compostos, em 
                         que os casos inclu{\'{\i}}dos foram selecionados usando o valor 
                         lim{\'{\i}}trofe de mais ou menos 0,5 desvio padr{\~a}o das 
                         componentes principais dos dois primeiros modos da an{\'a}lise de 
                         FOE de X*' em 200hPa para a Am{\'e}rica do Sul. Atrav{\'e}s da 
                         an{\'a}lise de compostos foi poss{\'{\i}}vel inferir que o modo 
                         dominante dessa an{\'a}lise descreve a variabilidade multidecadal 
                         do SMAS associada a padr{\~o}es caracter{\'{\i}}sticos da ODP, 
                         e que o segundo modo ilustra a variabilidade interanual associada 
                         ao El Niño/Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Sul. A an{\'a}lise de FOE de X*' 
                         em 200hPa para a banda global mostra que o SMAS est{\'a} 
                         relacionado com o sistema de mon{\c{c}}{\~a}o do leste da 
                         {\'A}sia na escala de tempo multidecadal e que o sistema de 
                         mon{\c{c}}{\~a}o da Am{\'e}rica do Norte e o sistema de 
                         mon{\c{c}}{\~a}o da {\'{\I}}ndia est{\~a}o relacionados na 
                         escala de tempo interanual. ABSTRACT: The main objective of the 
                         present work was to analyze the South American Monsoon System 
                         (SAMS) variability, and its relation to the Pacific Decadal 
                         Oscillation (PDO) phases. The relations of SAMS with other monsoon 
                         systems were also investigated. In order to investigate this 
                         variability, monthly anomalies of the deviation from the annual 
                         mean of the zonal deviation field of the velocity potential (X*') 
                         at 200hPa for the 1948-1999 period were subjected to the Empirical 
                         Orthogonal Function analysis. Additional monthly data of the sea 
                         surface temperature, surface air temperature, sea level pressure, 
                         vertical velocity at 500hPa, precipitable water and streamfunction 
                         at 200hPa were also used. Anomaly composites of these variables 
                         were obtained in near global areas using the cases selected for 
                         threshold of ±0.5 standard deviations of the principal components 
                         of the first two EOF modes of the analysis of X*' at 200hPa in 
                         South America. The dominant mode of this analysis describes the 
                         PDO related multi-decadal variability of the SAMS, while the 
                         second mode illustrates the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) 
                         related interannual variability. The EOF analysis of X*' at 200hPa 
                         in the global band shows that the SAMS and the East Asia monsoon 
                         system are related each other in the multi-decadal scale, and the 
                         North America monsoon and the Indian monsoon systems are related 
                         in the interannual scale.",
