                         Sub-Tropical do Oceano Atl{\^a}ntico Sul, denominada Frente ou 
                         linha frontal, que {\'e} uma descontinuidade termal, utilizando o 
                         Radi{\^o}metro Infravermelho para Temperatura e Umidade (THIR) do 
                         Sat{\'e}lite NIMBUS V no canal de 10,5 a 12,5 um e dados 
                         oceanogr{\'a}ficos, do per{\'{\i}}odo de 1972 a 1973. Setenta e 
                         cinco imagens foram interpretadas visualmente e algumas delas com 
                         o Image-100. O estudo foi feito superpondo as Frentes detetadas 
                         com o sat{\'e}lite, sobre cartas superficiais de Temperatura e 
                         Salinidade. Conclui-se que a Frente pode ser cartografada s{\'o} 
                         com os dados do sat{\'e}lite; as mudan{\c{c}}as sanzonais da 
                         Frente foram produzidas principalmente entre o Inverno e o 
                         Ver{\~a}o; cartas oceanoqr{\'a}ficas mostraram claramente a Zona 
                         de transi{\c{c}}{\~a}o onde a Frente se localizou, que 
                         corresponde ao encontro das correntes de Falkland e do Brasil; 
                         estat{\'{\i}}sticas pesqueiras mostraram valores de capturas 
                         m{\'a}ximas no m{\^e}s de setembro de 1973, em {\'a}reas onde 
                         se localizou a Frente; as cartas de correntes calculadas 
                         preliminarmente com dados de sat{\'e}lite foram da mesma escala 
                         das calculadas oceanograficamente.Estes resultados evidenciam a 
                         grande potencialidade dos dados de sat{\'e}lite para estudos 
                         oceanogr{\'a}ficos e pesqueiros ABSTRACT: The present work is an 
                         oceanographic study of the Western Fdge of the 
                         Sub-Trop{\'{\i}}cal Convergence of the South Atlant{\'{\i}}c 
                         Ocean, called Pront, which is a thermal discontinu-bty, 
                         ut{\'{\i}}liz{\'{\i}}na he Temperature Humidity Infrared 
                         Radiometer (THIR) of NIMPUS V {\'{\i}}n the 10.5 to 12.5 um 
                         channel and h{\'{\i}}storical oceanographic data, in the 
                         per{\'{\i}}od 1972 to 1973. Seventy five THIP images were 
                         visually interpreted and some of them with the Image-100. The main 
                         study uias done by superpos{\'{\i}}tion of the detected Fronts, 
                         on surface temperature and salinity charts. Some important results 
                         are: the oceanographic Front, as detected from the satellite, 
                         could be charted; seasonal changes occured mainly betimen Winter 
                         and Summer; oceanographic charts clearly shoijed that the 
                         transit{\'{\i}}on zone, where the Prazil and the Falkland 
                         Currents meet, tias the zone b)here, the Pront was located; 
                         fisheries statist{\'{\i}}cs showed that the maximum catches were 
                         obta{\'{\i}}ned in September 1973, in areas where the Front was 
                         located; ocean current charts, calculated preliminarly with 
                         satellite data, showed the same scale as those calculated 
                         oceanographically. These results showed the great 
                         potent{\'{\i}}ality of satell{\'{\i}}te data to study surface 
                         thermal structures, surface currents and oceanic fisheries.",
