             abstract = "The Amazon v{\'a}rzea is a vast ecosystem that plays a critical 
                         social and economic role in the Amazon. The v{\'a}rzea is a 
                         complex environment composed of different vegetation types ranging 
                         from very dense flooded forests to grasslands. Moreover, 
                         vegetation features are affected by the Amazon basin rivers' flood 
                         pulse. That complexity makes it challenging to map and estimate 
                         vegetation suppression. This study applied methodological 
                         adaptations to the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest Satellite 
                         Monitoring Program (PRODES) for mapping vegetation suppression in 
                         the Amazon v{\'a}rzea. The preliminary results showed that those 
                         adaptations allowed the interpreters to identify a more 
                         significant number of suppression-related features. The increase 
                         in the v{\'a}rzea vegetation suppression area was, on average, 
                         eight times larger than those using the original method. In 
                         summary, the proposed changes helped improve the interpretation of 
                         vegetation suppression in complex v{\'a}rzeas areas.",
