abstract = "A floresta amaz{\^o}nica {\'e} uma regi{\~a}o da floresta
nuvens {\'e} constante, ocasionando limita{\c{c}}{\~o}es no
imageamento por sensores. Deste modo, o uso de sensoriamento
remoto por radar torna-se privilegiado, pois as microondas
praticamente n{\~a}o sofrerem interfer{\^e}ncia
realizadas no SPRING e no SEGSAR).
No entanto, a
cena SAR.
omiss{\~a}o do PRODES. A an{\'a}lise indiciou ainda que o baixo
n{\'u}mero de pol{\'{\i}}gonos com E.O. na
classifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o SEGSAR (comparado com a
segmenta{\c{c}}{\~a}o SPRING) e o consider{\'a}vel n{\'u}mero
ac{\'u}mulo h{\'{\i}}drico no solo alguns dias antes do
uso do dado SAR. ABSTRACT The Amazon forest is a region of
rainforest, which has about 5.4 million square kilometers, and
with great biodiversity of species on the planet. However, its
traditional model of occupation has lead to significant levels of
increase of deforestation in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Through
remote sensing, these areas can be constantly monitored, offering
rates of control and estimation of deforested areas. Due to the
high rainfall rates, humidity and presence of clouds, which
characterize the Amazon region climate during the year, there are
limitations in optical imaging. The ability of Radar sensors to
acquire images through the clouds allows the continuous imaging of
areas regardless of weather conditions in the region. In this
context, this study evaluated the potential of the full-polarized
amplitude PLR ALOS/PALSAR L band data to discriminate the
deforestation increase over National Forest of Tapaj{\'o}s-PA.
The radar image segmentations and classifications were performed.
The MAXVER-ICM and Bhattacharyya (combined with SPRING and SEGSAR
segmentations) classifiers were used for all combinations of the
multipolarized images: HH, HV, VV, HH + HV, HV + VV, HH + VV and
HH + HV + VV. The results were compared with the PRODES thematic
map to detect the deforestation increment and the existence of
significant information loss when all the polarized channels were
not used, and to find the best polarization that characterizes the
deforestation. The Bhattacharyya classifier had higher accuracy
than MAXVER-ICM classifier. The best classifications were obtained
when the HH + HV polarization (segmented by SPRING and SEGSAR) was
used. The highest accuracy was obtained for the Bhattacharyya
combined with SPRING segmentation (kappa of 0.5085). However, the
HH + HV producer's accuracy was minor compared with other
combinations of polarization because the error of omission (E.O.)
has been higher. For the other channel combinations HH+HV, the
lower E.O. was obtained when the SEGSAR segmentations were used
but the error of inclusion (E.I.) was higher in relation to
classification of higher kappa. There was a detailed analysis of
the classifications Bhattacharyya (combined with SPRING and SEGSAR
segmentations) for the HH+HV polarization. The results of the
segmentation by SEGSAR showed that, considering the presence of
clouds in the Amazon region, the minor E.O. compared with the
segmentation by SPRING and the considerable number of polygons
initially classified as E.I. which were detected as increase of
deforestation by PRODES in the following year (2007), probably
because its were under clouds in 2006 or due to E.O. by PRODES,
proved the efficiency of the region based classification in the
use of microwave data. The results showed that the use of radar
mapping in tropical regions is an additional powerful tool for the
soil cover information acquisition throughout the year. The
combined radar and optical data is recommended for the detection
of new deforestation, the high E.O. of classification caused
mainly by areas of the deforestation fire, which are similar the
forest in the SAR image, and the double bounce effect (due to
water accumulation in the soil a few days before the imaging
radar, and the incidence of biomass (stump) in the soil in the
region of study), has limited the use of radar.",
