ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the impact of surface model parameter adjustments on the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) when conducting high-resolution simulations in a humid tropical forest environment in the Amazon. In this highly convective and extremely complex terrain, modeling the tropical PBL remains a challenge. Incorrect or insufficient surface descriptions can lead to deficiencies in representing turbulent transfer processes between the surface and the atmosphere, directly affecting numerical weather simulations. To address this, simulations were conducted using the JULES surface model coupled with the high-resolution BRAMS atmospheric model. Integrations were carried out from the model with two nested domains, with horizontal grid spacings of 5 km and 1 km, centered on the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) experimental site. A land-use map with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and a topographic map derived from SRTM images with a 90-meter resolution were developed for implementation in high-resolution simulations. The study was conducted in three stages: Sensitivity tests were performed to assess the influence of refining the vegetation map for domains with spatial resolutions of 5x5 km and 1x1 km, verification of the PBL parameterizations performance with grid nesting for d02, and evaluation of the effects of changes in surface characteristics. Implementing high-resolution land-use maps resulted in better correspondence between predictions and observed data, especially at the 1 km spatial resolution grid. The model yielded good results in estimating most of the analyzed variables, except for wind intensity (all levels) and incident long-wave radiation. |
